Our university's Technical Sciences Vocational School Food Processing Department Lecturer Dr. Sefa Işık was an invited speaker at the 2024 Food Safety Seminar organized by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on September 4, 2024, with the participation of academicians, students and industry representatives.
Invited by Dr. Byron Chaves, a respected name in the field of food safety and serving as USDA FSIS Nebraska HACCP Coordinator, FSMA Central Nebraska State Leader and USDA FSIS National Meat and Poultry Inspection Advisory Committee member, Dr. Işık discussed pathogen transfer in microgreen production and the effectiveness of Ultraviolet-C light used to reduce these risks in his presentation titled "How Are Microgreens Contaminated and How Is Food Safety Achieved?".
At the event, Dr. Işık's important findings such as contamination of growing material and feeding solutions during microgreen production, transfer of pathogens to microgreens and possible localization of pathogens attracted wide attention.
After the presentation, Dr. Işık stated that there may be opportunities to develop potential collaborations with the University of Nebraska in the field of research and thanked our Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alican and our Technical Sciences Vocational School Director Assist. Prof. Fatih Şevgin for their support.
